They also could identify the antique or quality pieces from the scrap gold items. Times where good ..you had the pawn shops on the low end! And quality places on the high end!

Then gold started to go up and the invention of the gold buying stores. Many out of work people and slick businessman saw a gold store as their get rich quick ticket. Gold buying stores are a pawn shop that doesn't loan or sale anything! Modern day snake oil salesman with their grandiose clams! Some gold buying stores employ past taco bell workers, gardeners and others with no experience and knowledge of what they're looking at. So now we have chain stores advertising to buy items and pay the most, with 20% - 100% more coupons and trips to Vegas, outlandish clams that make no logical since if you think about it.  Oh, they're betting you don't think and just react to their clams.
